Varsity Football Dominates in Home Opener

Fresh off of their win at Festus, the Cats picked up right where they left off with a 42-6 trouncing over St. Dominic. The scoring started with 7:36 to go in the first quarter when Steve Webb, Junior, ran for a 13 yard TD. Andrew Kempen, Freshman, knocked in the extra point and the Cats took a 7-0 lead. Two minutes later, quarterback Evan Johnson, Senior, scampered 17 yards for a score. The Cats added another score, making the 21-0 at the end of the first quarter. Westminster continued to dominate, matching their first quarter performance with 21 more points in the second. Logan Sells, Junior, caught a 20 yard strike from Johnson in the back of the end zone. Dylan Conway, Junior, added a 6 yard score, and Cameron Tucker, Senior, ran for a tough 37 yard run. St. Dominic struggled to move the ball all day long, as Westminster’s defense turned in another strong performance. A blocked punt and a Drew Melaragno, Senior, interception contributed to the strong performance. Possibly the only blemish in an otherwise stellar performance happened early in the second half. After catching a screen, Conway, one of the Cats top receivers, ran up the sideline before being tackled awkwardly from behind. He was tended to by trainers for several minutes before being carried off the field with an apparent ankle injury. The Cats are back in action at home next Saturday against a tough Lutheran North squad. The game is at 1 o’clock, so be there to cheer on the 2 and 0 Football Wildcats.
