David Defeats Goliath

6’10, 6’10, 6’7. Despite the tallest Westminster player being 6 inches shorter than Francis Howell’s biggest, The basketball Wildcats played big and defeated the Vikings with Coach Coleman’s help defense neutralizing the height difference.

With a raucous Blue Crew behind them, the Wildcats stormed out in the first quarter. The Cats layed their bodies on the line, diving for loose balls, and defending the Viking forwards.

Midway through the half, Aaron Cook, senior, crossed his man and soared high above the rim to posterize the Howell defender. Cook had three thunderous dunks on the night.

Coming out of the locker room, the Howell Vikings played like a team possessed and battled back with the help of sloppy ball handling to tie the score at 44.

After a time out, Cook took over. He went around, over and past defenders en route to a season high 33 points. Cliff DeGroot, junior, hit key threes in he fourth quarter to seal the win for the Cats. He finished with 11 points.

The 60-53 victory marks Westminster’s first MICDS Tournament Championship in program history.

Stat of the game: Aaron Cook’s 33 points accounted for 54% of Westminster’s total.

Congratulations to Cliff DeGroot and Aaron Cook for making the All-Tournament team.
