Soccer Edges Past Timberland

Timberland came into the Wildcat’s home field on Wednesday to go up against a strong Westminster team. After going down 0-2 early, the Cats clawed back to win 3-2.
Timberland’s Mason Rushing started off the scoring just two minutes into the game. A beautiful through ball went to Rushing and he buried it in the left corner, beating goalie Brandon Beat.
Westminster came back firing. They had possession of the ball for the majority of the time. The Cats had multiple opportunities and couldn’t finish their shots. Timberland had yet another opportunity to put the Cats away with a penalty kick. Mason Rushing put the ball in the back of the net taking a 2-0.
With under five minutes left in the first half, Trent Tarantino was fouled just outside the box to set up a free kick. Harry Medler delivered a cross that landed on Teddy Bacon’s head which he put in the back of the net to get the Wildcats back into the game and make it 1-2.
Both teams began the second half just where they had left off. Westminster’s stellar defense finally figured out the Timberland offense and shut them down. Dan Legters, coach of the Wildcats made some formation adjustments and decided to put three forwards up top to try and get something going.
“At halftime I decided to switch it up and have three forwards play up top to give the Timberland defense some pressure.” Said Dan Legters, varsity head coach at Westminster.
Results were seen almost immediately. Just twelve minutes into the second half, Junior Frankie Sacco tied the game at two with a penalty kick. Both teams were battling to win the game. Fellow Junior Erik Bergman was tripped up just about 45 yards away from the goal. Senior Connor Dolan sent a ball soaring through the air that once again found the head of Teddy Bacon who put the game away 3-2 with under ten minutes left.
“I’m glad the team was able to make the adjustments that we did to win this game.” Said Coming back from a deficit like this just shows what this team is capable of.” Said Teddy Bacon, senior defender.
With Timberland pushing the ball up like they were in the offensive zone, the Senior leadership in the backfield including Will Wetzel, Connor Dolan, and Ted Bacon really paid a big role for the Wildcats to pull off the comeback victory.
“Without some of the seniors and their leadership on this team, it would have been hard to pull off this victory.” Said Erik Bergman, junior forward.
The Wildcats continue their season on Friday against St. Charles West(3-3).
