Baseball Team Getting Hot at the Right Time

Can the Westminster baseball team find the program’s fifth state championship since 2011 this year? The Wildcats are rolling with an 8 game win streak and a season record of 18-3. The team has 7 games remaining in the regular season, and they’re looking to reschedule two more games that were rained out earlier in the season.

Jimmy Obertop leads the team at the plate, batting .509 with six home runs, eight doubles, and two triples on the year. Close behind is right fielder Blaise Matheny, who is batting .429 with seven doubles and three triples.

“I am seeing the ball well, and I am trying to put the ball in the gaps to help my team win games,” said senior catcher, Jimmy Obertop.

The team is finding success in their starting players as well as the players on the bench. The bench is constantly finding new ways to feed energy to their pitcher on the mound and the batter at the plate. The team found a way to score at least one run in every inning in their conference rivalry game against Luther South, where they stomped the Lancers by a score of 8-0. The team has come up with a new “team mascot” as the season has progressed. They have added a large, plush bass in the dugout to find energy as they swim in their opponents’ heads.

The Wildcats look to battle for another win against the Lancers this Friday. They’ll look to seal their home field advantage for this season’s playoff run. The team has a tough schedule for the remainder of the year, facing some large schools such as Marquette, Holt, Lafayette, Liberty, and Francis Howell. The team will play Lafayette Lancers the final game of the year, where they will be looking for revenge from their 8-0 loss early this year.

“We have a tough stretch coming up these next couple of weeks. We need to play at our own pace, keep our approach at the plate, and set the tone early in the game,” said, Dan Petke, head coach.

Come support the Wildcats through the end of the year and into their playoff run.
