Ah, an article that should have been written a month ago. Those dastardly slow SportingWCA writers take forever, you say? The news may be old, but the accolades can be celebrated just the same, as a number of our own Westminster athletes performed brilliantly against Missouri’s highest level of runners. Here is the full list of performances from the state track meet back on May 27 & 28.
Shoes laced and tied, these athletes were the best of the best and played similarly ranked athletes from all around Missouri in the Missouri Class 4 State Championship. For some, this was the pinnacle of a long high school career (the weekend after finals). For others, it was just the beginning. Every year, our top athletic programs take hit after hit with the departure of seemingly irreplaceable seniors. Year after year, big time athletes step up and grow into some big shoes. Future track stars could include the likes of Evan Parres, Xander Smith, Blake Elder, and David Montgomery. Expect many more incredible seasons from our fine running program.
Andrew Murray, 1600 M Run
Senior Andrew Murray, our October cover athlete for his Cross Country accolades, placed 12th in the 1600 M run. He ran a 4:35 mile, a mere 18 seconds slower than the first place finisher.
Evan Parres, 3200 M
In the 2 mile run, class of 2018 stud Evan Parres finished in 10:09, good for 11th overall.
Boys 4 X 800 M Relay
After an initial disqualification, the boys ended up placing sixth.
Boys 4 X 400 M Relay
This relay placed a solid 15th.
Alivia Johnston, High Jump
With her 4′ 8″ Jump in the finals, Alivia Johnston placed fifteenth in the state. She finished second in sectionals with a jump 5′ 1″ high, the school record.
Jack Andrews and Connor Hafenrichter, 800 M Run
During a highly contested, remarkably close race, Connor achieved the better time of the two seniors with a 1:58 0.5 mile time, a close 1.9 seconds behind the first place finisher. Andrew posted a still-great time of 2:03.
These are all of Westminster’s top 15 finishes. A great season for all of these guys and girls, and a special shout out to our departing seniors, as track will feel the loss of not only athletes mentioned here, but all who participated in a splendid year for our school’s running program.
