Thomas Shultz

In an exciting turn-around in the first home game of the season, the Varsity Girls Volleyball defeated John Burroughs in a three-set game with a comeback in the second set.

In the first set, the Wildcats were down 12-21 when Bricyn Johnson, Junior went on a nine-point serving run, tying up the game and bringing up the team’s energy and moral. Even with a close loss in the first set, the girls now had something to prove and the momentum was rolling. With renewed vigor, the team went out on the court in the second game more determined than ever to win the game.

As points bounced back and forth, both teams were off the bench and cheering on their teammates in an effort to boost the spirit of the players on the court. With the help of passes from Emma Gustafson, Senior and Avery Burkemper, Junior in the back row, the Wildcats began landing kill after kill which ended the game with a score of 25-22 Westminster.

The pressure was on in the third set which would determine the winner. Coach Crutcher imparted some words of wisdom to the girls as they were going into the third set, “We are almost there, don’t tense up and remember who your playing for”. With a resounding “Wildcats!” and a confident attitude, the players walked onto the court ready to end it once and for all. As the Burroughs defense began to crumble, the Wildcats increased their lead with Sarah-Elizabeth, Senior in the front line with her incredible swing. As the game became close, the Wildcats pushed forward and won the game by three points.

A wave of blue surged off the bench and onto the court to celebrate the first win of the season. Ending with a prayer with the other team, the Varsity Volleyball team went home ready for the rest of the season and eager for their next game.
