A beautiful summer afternoon was the perfect setting for the first home game of the Field Hockey season, as the Lady Cats took on the Oakville Tigers.
The entire game was a back and forth affair, as opportunity after opportunity came and the ball glided between teams. Possession was shared relatively evenly, as were shots on goal. Notably, Avery Drury, senior, and Rebekah Warren, sophomore, collectively had a few strong clearances to thwart Oakland from further scoring.
The Oakville goal came late in the second half, with ten of the allotted thirty minutes remaining.
Freshman goaltender Chloe Haupfear became the first freshman in the program’s history to appear in a varsity match, starting and finishing at goalie.
Coach Schmer, the varsity coach, had nothing but praise for the young goalie. “She was amazing. We are so proud of her. She really held it together, and her defense really held it together. I feel like our defense wanted her to do well and look good. That is just the kind of group of girls this team is. We want to win games and we wanna glorify God in the process.” said Schmer.
“The whole team was the best person out there,” said Chloe in response to the praise.
This community was also noted by Chloe’s sister Izzy Haupfear, senior, who also starred in today’s game as she contributed two second half, brilliantly placed assists. “I think we are very supportive of each other [as a team]. I mean, you can just tell on the field we are always there to back each other up. We are all really close and good friends” said Haupfear.
Next, the field hockey team competes Tuesday against Parkway West, at Westminster at 4:15.
