Westminster’s Softball team opened up their season with their home opener on Monday against the Incarnate Word Red Knights. The cats scored early but couldn’t match the Knights late 6th inning surge, losing 4-3.
Westminster’s Keely Sweet, Senior, pitched a complete game, striking out 7 and giving up 3 earned runs.
Incarnate word threatened to score first in the bottom of the second inning, but Sweet managed to buckle down and strike out the side
The scoring started when Taylor Dorsey, Senior, led off the second inning with a base hit and then was driven in by Deanne Pfyl, Sophomore, who hit a soaring fly ball over the left fielder’s head that rattled against the wall for a double.
The cats continued their scoring in the bottom of the third inning with Dorsey hitting a line drive double off the left field wall bringing in Danny Mabry and Izzy Clawson, Sophomore.
Incarnate word turned the bats on in the 6th inning hitting back to back riffling line drives to the outfield scoring three runs. Incarnate Word kept the line moving with a grounder to Annie Backs, Senior, at second to move the runner to third. Another grounder to Backs plated the go ahead run making the score 4-3.
Dorsey started the bottom of 6th with an infield single then advanced to second base on a throwing error by the shortstop. The cats squandered a golden opportunity to score leaving Dorsey stranded on the base
Cats came up to hit again in the bottom of the 7th and quickly ran into two outs. The Red Knights then walked back to back batters having a scoring chance but the cats couldn’t empty the bases, stranding both runners.
Although the softball team lost their season opener they do have a couple more games this week facing Rosati-Kain on Tuesday and Lutheran St. Charles on Wednesday.
