It may be September, but hockey season is already starting up for the Westminster Varsity Hockey Team. The Ice Cats started off the 2015/16 campaign in style, beating the Rockwood Summit Falcons 8-2 in the opening game of the Marquette Tournament.
The Cats opened the scoring early in the first period, with sophomore Levi Wright picking the top corner five minutes into the period. Thirty seconds later, junior Harry Medler made the score 2-0 with a nifty wraparound goal. The Falcons had a few chances near the end of the period, but the horn sounded with the score still at 2-0.
The second period started with the Cats still in control of the game. 58 seconds into the period, junior Charlie Zone put the puck in the back of the net with a tight angle shot. With the score now at 3-0 in favor of the Ice Cats, junior Zach Nall added his name to the scoresheet, finding the net three minutes later. Up 4-0, the Ice Cats began to play lazily, and Summit cut the lead in half with two quick goals.
After a tactical time out by the WCA coach, the cats answered back 15 seconds later, with a good goal by senior Gannon Mcward. A minute later, senior Willie Canfield scored on a beautiful solo effort to bring the score to 6-2. The Cats continued to pressure the Falcons late into the second period, with Mcward finding the net again to make it 7-2.
The third period was a much slower period, with the Ice Cats shutting the Falcons down with strong defense. Even with tenacious defense, junior Nick Callier finished off the scoring halfway through the period to make it 8-2. After the goal, defensive play resumed, and the score would end at 8-2.
