Westminster Soccer defeated Lutheran South 3-2 tonight. A strong first half performance carried the team on their way to a 2-0 record in Metro League play. The Wildcats took the field hungry to get a revenge win over the Lancers, after falling to them in the season opening tournament. Straight from the opening whistle the energy and intensity shown by Westminster far outpaced that of Lutheran South. After twenty minutes of strong play, Senior Sam Hunsicker opened up the scoring, finishing off of a nice breakaway run. With the score 1-0, the Wildcats would not let up. Just eight minutes before the half, David Kerckhoff, Junior, shot and scored a beautiful goal from well outside the box. Three minutes later, Hunsicker would add a third Wildcat goal to make it 3-0 at the half. Coming out of halftime, the game would resume with Westminster looking to score again, and put the game out of reach. But a resilient Lutheran South team would fight hard, giving the Wildcats trouble for much of the second half. The Lancers scored two quick goals, and the tide of the game began to shift in their favor. Nevertheless, the Wildcat defense remained resilient. Led by goalkeeper Jack Linton, Senior, the defense buckled down and grinded out a respectable 3-2 win.
The Wildcats will continue their season with their third Metro League game of the year on thursday at Principia at 4:15.
