Webb Breaks School Record In Cats Win

The Wildcats put their undefeated record to the test at home against the Lancers of Lutheran South. After a strong 60 minutes football, they emerged victorious 49-14, extending their perfect record to 5-0.

Westminster set the tone in the first quarter, surging out to a 20-0 lead. Steve Webb, Junior, got things started at the 8:40 mark, rushing for one of his 3 scores on the day, this one from 3 yards out, giving the Cats a 7-0 lead. 4 minutes later, Westminster cashed in on another opportunity when Cam Tucker made it 14-0 with an 8 yard touchdown run.

The highlight of the drive came when Webb broke the school rushing record when he ran for his 1,867th yard, passing Trey Merritt as the schools all time leader. He piled up 109 yards on 14 carries for the day. This marks the second straight week in which he has broken a school record, last week’s being the career touchdown record.

The first quarter onslaught continued when Evan Johnson, Senior, connected with Zach Hughes, Senior, for a 42 yard touchdown that pushed the lead to 20-0. Johnson finished the day 9-13 for 172 yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception.

The Cats continued to dominate in the second quarter, countering a Lancer score with two of their own. Webb rushed for a 29 TD and Casey Hinds, Senior, caught a 3 yard pass from Johnson, giving the Cats a 34-7 lead at halftime.

The Westminster defense once again turned in a stong performance, hold the Lancers powerful running game in check all day long. Mason Davitt, Senior, lead the charge with two swatted passes, a sack, and a blocked punt.

Westminster’s stong play continued in the second half, and they rode their big lead to a 49-14 victory. The Wildcats will look to keep the perfect record alive next week against Priory on the road.
