The Westminster Varsity hockey team continued their perfect start to the 2015 pre-season, beating Fort Zumwalt West in the championship game of the Marquette Invitational.
A much better team than the Cats had played this season, it would require hard work to gain an advantage. The Cats knew this, and struck first. A beautiful assist from senior Emma Cockrum found junior Harry Medler to give the Cats an early 1-0 lead. Following the goal, the Cats put up strong defense to thwart any chance of a FZW equalizer.
As the second period began, the Cats stepped back and played extremely cautious. Numerous questionable penalties have the Cats a numerical disadvantage for the majority of the period, but they stayed firm. Senior goaltender Scott Caldwell came up big, denying FZW on many occasions. Near the end of the period, WCA doubled their lead through a hard shot by Jack Canfield, freshman.
As the third period began, the Cats recovered from their shaky play and got back to business. They played stronger defense, but more questionable penalties gave FZW a 5 on 3 power play halfway through the period, and they quickly made it 2-1. Following the goal, strong defensive work took over and the Cats did their best to finish out the game. With under a minute left Zumwalt West pulled their goalie in a last ditch effort to tie the game, and it ended up being a bad move. With under 10 seconds left, a long pass found Medler, who easily scored to end the game at 3-1.
Congratulations to the WCA Varsity Hockey Team: 2015 Marquette Invitational champions.
