Despite shielding off four match points in the third set, the Westminster Women’s Volleyball comeback effort fell just short in a 2-1 home loss to Parkway Central. The 4th place Cats (11-10-1) strung together four straight sophomore kills late in the third, nearly claiming the last set. The Colts (13-5-1) snuck out the victory 25-15, 23-25, 28-26.
In a game that heavily relied on key sophomore play, right-side hitter Avery Engelmeyer led the team with ten kills and block (three of her last kills came in match point situations). As a setter, the vast majority of her assists went in the direction of sophomore, middle Madelyn Williams, who recorded eight kills and a pair of blocks. Along side her sister, senior Meegan Williams tallied four kills and a block also leading the Cats searching offense. Junior Elisabeth Sems recorded three kills and block in her efforts in the Cats loss.
The Colts made scoring a premium early on in the first set, quickly mounting an 18-9 deficit. A 5-1 run momentarily gave the Cats new life, but it was not enough to match the powerful onslaught of Parkway Central kills eventually giving way to a 25-15 loss.
The script was flipped in set number two, as an Avery Engelmeyer diving play and consecutive Madelyn Williams kills gave the Cats their first lead of the game. In a three lead change match a more dominant Westminster offense battled its way to a 25-23 victory on a devastating kill from Madelyn Williams.
In the final set, WCA fought to a 10-8 score only to be slowed by a 6-1 Colts run. This see-saw battle saw seven lead changes along with several brilliant plays by both sides. The Cats tied the game at 20 after dueling William sister kills, but ran into a Colts strong defensive front who were able to extend the game to four match points. Parkway Central was finally able to close it out on a kill, making it 28-26. It’s off to Lindbergh for the Wildcats this upcoming week on Monday. The contest will start at 5:15 pm.
