Varsity Hockey Held Against Chaminade
- Updated: 10/08/2015
In the Ice Cat’s second game of the Top Hat Tournament tonight, one theme resonated throughout the entire competition: penalties are bad.
There were a lot of penalties in the Cat’s tie against Chaminade. In total, both teams had 8 of them. This set the Cats back from the outset of the game, leaving them on an almost permanent penalty kill. Despite this, they handled their short handedness fairly well. Senior goaltender Scott Caldwell saved 31 out of 32 Red Devil shots, only letting in a long slap shot late in the second period.
Despite the large number of penalties, the Cats managed 25 shots on goal. Senior forward Willie Canfield scored the Cat’s only goal of the game early in the second period. A blocked shot in the defensive zone gave him a 1 on 1 attack, and he finished clinically.
The one silver lining from taking so many penalties is that the Cat’s got to work on their penalty kill unit. The unit went 8 for 8 on kills, putting in key blocks and interceptions to keep the score tied.
The Cat’s next game is October 15th at Webster Groves against Lutheran South. Let’s hope there aren’t as many penalties.
