While the rest of Westminster was enjoying their Thanksgiving break, the Varsity Hockey Team (and the Blue Crew) toppled the highly ranked Lindbergh Flyers 6-3.
The Cats faced a strong Lindbergh team in October, falling to the Flyers 3-1 despite out shooting the Flyers in October’s contest. Friday night was a different story. The Wildcats had a shaky start defensively, resulting in a Flyer goal at the 5:43 mark of the first. Following the goal, the Cats buckled down on both ends of the ice. Senior Willie Canfield tied the game up a minute after going down with a hard shot from the wing.
The Cats remained strong at the opening of the second period. At the 13:42 mark, it was Canfield who would find the net again, coming under an inch perfect pass from junior Jason Kelly. The Flyers pushed hard for a tying goal for most of the second, but the Wildcat defense and senior goaltender Scott Caldwell stood firm. With under five minutes in the period, the Cats put up two more goals. Freshman Jack Canfield stuffed in a rebound from close range at the 4:50 mark, and senior Gannon McWard scored back-door minutes later to bring the Cats to 4 goals. A Lindbergh goal late in the period made it a 4-2 game at the end of the second.
The third period was low on goals scoring action until the 9:05 mark, with the Flyers scoring to make it a contest. The Wildcat defense held firm after the goal, deny Lindbergh a thing effort. With under 4 minutes to play, Willie Canfield finished off his hat-trick, scoring point-blank on a beautiful pass from Kelly. Minutes later, he netted a fourth with an empty net goal.
Be sure to catch the Wildcats in action on Monday as they take on conference rivals Marquette.
