Coming off their first ever MICDS Tournament Championship, the Wildcats continued their strong play with a 54-47 win over the Ladue Rams.
Westminster got of to hot start in the game, using their speed to jump out to 14-8 1st quarter lead. Senior Aaron Cook slammed home three of his five total dunks in the quarter that electrified a raucous Blue Crew. Jordan Hawkins, who had 11 points in the game, also added six 1st quarter points as a beneficiary of drives and dishes by Wildcat guards. The Rams cut into the Wildcat lead in the second quarter, narrowing the margin to three at halftime.
Westminster once again stepped up to the challenge of facing larger opponents. Junior Steve Webb was a beast inside all game, snatching down rebounds and scoring 12 tough points that almost all came in the paint. Cook and Webb both held the Ram big men in check and contributed multiple blocks
The teams remained deadlocked throughout the 3rd quarter. Westminster went on multiple runs, only to have the momentum snatched back by the Rams who went on a similar run. Nevertheless, the Wildcats never trailed in the game, thwarting off any Ram comeback attempt.
The Wildcats entered the fourth up three once again, but used some of their eight second half turnovers explode out to an 13 point lead. Aaron Cook stuffed home two more dunks, and Junior Cliff Degroot nailed a three with 3:44 that appeared to seal the game. However, the Wildcats did not make it so easy for themselves, and the Rams climbed back within six thanks to missed free throws by the Cats (They shot 48% on the day). Despite making things interesting, Westminster was able to hold off Ladue and hang on for the seven point win.
