For the first time since their Marquette Invitational title in September, the Varsity Hockey team has won three games straight. Coming off a comfortable win against Chaminade, the Wildcats crushed the Lafayette Lancers 8-3.
Despite the lopsided scoreline, the Wildcats came out completely flat in the first period. Despite being a much deeper and skilled team than the Lancers, the Cats could not muster any offense. Luckily, the Lancers were equally unenergetic, resulting in a long and boring period.
The second period was much different. From the beginning of the period, the Wildcats took complete control of the game. Senior Willie Canfield scored the opener off a pass from junior Jason Kelley, and the Cats were just getting started. Senior Gannon McWard scored a minute later to double the lead of a great shot in the slot. 45 seconds later, sophomore Levi Wright continued his goal streak to three straight games, ripping a slap shot past the Lancer goaltender. Lafayette pulled a goal back less than a minute later, but Westminster again responded quickly. Junior Charlie Zone scored unassisted at the 5:32 mark of the second to bring the score to 4-1. After another Lafayette goal, Kelley was again on the scoresheet, slotting home from the high slot. He doubled his assist count for the night two minutes later, finding Wright on the back door to end the period with a commanding 6-2 lead.
By the time the third period rolled around, the Lancers all but gave up. Despite this, the Cats continued to score. Junior Logan Bauer burst by the Lafayette defense and scored top shelf to make it 7-2. Late in the third, a tough redirection of a Lancer skate brought the score to 7-3, but it was too little too late. With under 5 seconds left in the game, sophomore Andrew Tipton scored his first ever varsity goal to end the game at 8-3.
