Home or away, it is always tough to take on a defending state champion. And this proved true as Villa Duchesne took down the WCA Wildcats in two straight sets winning 25-10 and 25-18.
Even with the Varsity volleyball team making their presence known early in the first set, the cats could not prevent Villa from jumping out to an imposing 9-1 lead. The defending champion Saints did not look back after taking the lead as they went on to dominate the first set.
The Wildcats came back strong in the second set and gave their fans something to cheer about as they were able to keep the game close until the Saints went on a stellar 8 point run. Facing 9 set points, the Cats won the first to stay alive, but an attempted kill that was sent out of bounds stifled comeback hopes as quickly as they began.
Even though the score may say otherwise, no point was won easily for the Saints of Villa Duchesne. The teams had to battle for every point, and the game was even tied late in the second set at 16.
“The best thing we can call this game is a learning experience,” said Jordan Haeusser, Junior Setter, “I think we focused too much on the fact that they were the state champs and we got in our own heads a little bit. We need to focus on playing our game and playing up to the level of our competitors because we so can.”
Some of the bright spots for the Cats came from Junior Avery Englemeyer, who featured 4 kills, and also from fellow Junior Taylor Andrasko, who recorded 7 digs.
“Avery and Taylor did as much as they could to focus on their jobs and to convert on their portion of our game plan, [but] as a team we just didn’t quite follow through,” said Haeusser.
The Lady Cats next game at home is September 12th.
