Last night, the Wildcats lost a hard, well-fought battle against the Lutheran South Lancers.
Walking into the Lutheran South gym, the Girl’s Varsity Volleyball team knew they needed to win this game. Coming off two hard losses, the Wildcats had something to prove.
The first point of the first set was won by Westminster. This led to a back-and-forth match, each team neck and neck until point 14, when the Lancers’ started slowly pulling ahead.
The Lutheran South outside hitter, a Mizzou commit named Leketor Member-Meneh, hit a few balls that went through the floor, but Westminster stayed competitive the whole game. Right side hitter Sarah Elizabeth Williams and middle hitters Madeline Williams and Hilary Hightower all got blocks against her, which thrilled Westminster. “Blocking her got me really excited and the team really energized for the rest of the game because I knew if we could shut her down, then we could shut down the rest of the team,” said Williams.
The first set ended with the Lancers winning 25-17, leaving the Wildcats to fight for their lives in the second set.
In the second set, the Wildcats came out strong, making the score 9-2 before Lutheran South could realize what was happening. Everything was looking good for the cats until the Lancers went on a serving run, and the Westminster team just could not stop it. Junior captain Madeline Williams said, “We started off strong, but we need to learn how to finish.”
Although the Wildcats lost, they proved that they can compete with the best of the best and play up to the level of their opponents. Junior Captain Avery Engelmeyer said, “After a hard week of practice, we really pushed ourselves harder than before, [and] we definitely proved that it was all worth it last night.”
“Although we lost,” said Engelmeyer, “I am so proud of how well we fought. Lutheran South is a strong team, but we put up a really good fight.”
Come out and support the Volleyball Cats as they play again early in the morning Saturday at 9:15 at Rockwood Summit.
