Football Falls on Last Second Field Goal
The Westminster Wildcats were stunned 21-24 by Christian High on a field goal with 2 seconds left.
Westminster went into Friday night’s game excited that their starting quarterback, Chad Briden, was playing in his first game since week 2. They were looking to get an easy win against an 0-7 Christian High team, but Christian High had other plans.
Westminster, like so many other weeks, started off the scoring. On their second possession of the game, RB Steve Webb found the end zone from 6 yards out to take the lead 7-0.
Westminster’s next possession started on their own 25 following an interception by senior safety Josh Pottebaum. The Wildcats drove own the field, but were stuffed on 3rd and short and forced to attempt a 40 yard field goal, but Christian High broke the the line and got a hand on the ball forcing it to go wide right. “This was a big turning point in the game,” said sophomore special teams member Jack Smith, “their defense really got a boost after that and their whole team started playing differently.”
This was clear on Christian High’s first possession in the second quarter. They put together a quick drive that went 73 yards and ended in a 3 yard touchdown run by Brady Tolle to tie the game at 7-7 with 10 minutes to go in the half.
The next score wasn’t until 3 minutes to go in the third quarter as Westminster sophomore RB Atlin Hall had a 13 yard touchdown run to retake the lead 14-7.
But in the fourth quarter, Christian High responded with a 13 yard touchdown pass from Evan Soell to Brady Tolle to tie the game at 14.
Then, just 2 minutes later, Tolle added to his already impressive game with another touchdown run, his third of the game, to give Christian High the lead at 21-14 with only 3 minutes to go in the game.
Westminster then drove down the field and Chad Briden connected with WR Grant Lavalle who made a spectacular diving catch to tie the game 21-21 with only 53 sec left in regulation.
However, the Wildcats broke down on the ensuing kickoff and allowed Christian High returner Evan Soell to break free and go all the way to the Wildcat 23 yard line. Westminster kicker Andrew Kempen made the touchdown saving tackle, but it was only a short moment of relief. Christian High milked the clock down to 2 seconds, and kicker Zach Harding split the uprights to give Christian High the victory 24-21.
“It was a very disappointing loss,” said Senior captain Josh Pottebaum, “We played a solid game but we just couldn’t finish our drives and do the little things that we need to do to win, but, as always, we’re looking to learn from our mistakes and be prepared for next week’s game.”
