Men’s Basketball Preview

The 2016-2017 basketball season is upon us, and the returning seniors have high hopes to live out the name that Westminster Basketball has become. Tryouts began yesterday, and with everyone just getting back into it, one can imagine that every single player would be excited for the upcoming season. This year’s team, led by Seniors Steve Webb and Cliff Degroot, is humble but hungry. Other schools, and even students here at WCA, are assuming that our basketball team will not be as good this year. The Cats lost six seniors last year, along with one of them going on to play Division 1 basketball. On the other hand, there are multiple seniors that did not play last year, who are coming back, such as Devin Stuart and Dyllan Conway. Also, the team is excited about the new addition of Weston Schad, who is coming in open to learn and excited to grow with the team. “We can be great this year,” said senior Steve Webb, “all we need is a junior or two to be able to come off the bench and score for us.” There are multiple Juniors this year, coming off of a highly successful JV season last year, who are looking to make an impact this year. Logan Montgomery, Levi Alldredge, Alex Token, and Dominic Cusumano, to name a few. These four men, including Chad Briden, who is injured as of now, look to be impact players this year for the Cats, knowing the big shoes they have to fill due to the uncharacteristically large number of seniors graduating last year. Steve Webb and Cliff Degroot both have high hopes for themselves this season, because both are hoping to continue their basketball careers after the season ends. Webb received an offer over the summer from UMSL, while Cliff is gaining a lot of attention from colleges around the midwest such as Truman State, William Woods, and Rockhurst, due to his electrifying shot. Another reason the team is looking upward for this season, is because the Wildcats have added new head coach Dale Ribble. Coach Ribble played at Missouri Baptist, and has coached at Lindenwood and UMSL, so there is no doubt that he knows the game. In the end, the Wildcats are excited for the 2016-2017 season, and they start play on November 17, in the Kirkwood Jamboree. Their first regular season game is November 28th, make sure to come out and support!
