The Futbol Cats put up a fantastic effort against a talented Parkway South squad on Senior Night, however they came up short by a score of 3-0.
The game was very back and forth Parkway South simply executed their opportunities better than the Cats. The first example came 21 minutes into the game, WCA had a throw in about halfway between their goal and midfield. The throw in came and the Cats began to head down the field, however the throw was intercepted and promptly taken into the goal by Alex Hunt. Who scored again just a couple minutes later on a miscommunication by the Wildcat defense.
The game was much closer than the score as WCA had several bright spots in the game. Senior’s Chase Lottmann, and Frankie Sacco showed some gritty play on Senior night. Lottmann nearly recorded an assist 26 minutes in when he sent a great ball downfield to Liam Lloyd. A very speedy South defender was just barely able to slide in and knock the ball away just before it found Lloyd. Sacco is very quietly one of the best athletes Westminster has to offer. He sits back when the opposing team has the ball but once he sees an opportunity he pounces. Amazing ball control and awareness are what make Sacco so great. He gave the Cats a chance with 16 minutes left, he out ran a couple defenders before being tripped on a breakaway, leading to a free kick and a flurry of offensive opportunities for the Cats, who came closest to a shot on goal by Luke Heintz who was stopped by a very talented South goalie.
Ricky Johnson also came off of Senior Night festivities to play a pretty impressive game. Johnson dove on a ball that had been rattling around in the box in the first half which drew some cheers from the crowd. He also made a couple of great kick saves showing off his quick twitch skills late in the second half. South was however able to find the goal again late in the game to go ahead 3-0. The Cats did not quit, they were able to get a couple more shots on goal late as Sacco hit the crossbar from outside the box and Luke Linam just barely was unable to convert on the rebound.
The team is graduating 10 seniors this year. One of which, Erik Bergman, has been on the team since his Freshman year. Bergman, unfortunately, has missed almost the entirety of the season due to a knee injury. His presence has been missed this year, as will all of the Seniors next year.
“
The players to watch step up next season are lead by Patrick Claus, who has been a varsity player since his Freshman year. Claus was very impressive today against a very fast South unit. Claus flew around the field and played with an amazing combination of physicality and finesse.
