On Friday the Futbol Cats battled with the Clayton Greyhounds winning 1-0 with great defensive pressure giving the goalies little action.
The Greyhounds were in first place in their district so the Cats knew that they would have a tough game. In the first half, both teams went back and forth turning the ball over to each other again and again not getting many shots on net.
Sophomore Danny Sacco was the only Cat with a good shot on goal as this was the team’s only open chance for a good shot.
The second half was very entertaining, junior goalie Joey Keane sat out in the first half and it’s a good thing he got rested up for the intense pressure of the Greyhounds. Clayton had many fast breaks and free kicks which pressured Joey Keane.
Clayton dominated in possession the whole second half, rarely turning the ball over to the Wildcats. This resulted in many shots on goal and many stellar saves by Keane. After one of his saves, Keane punted the ball 50 yards where Frankie Sacco settled the ball and was immediately fouled.
The ball was set up for a free kick on Claytons 40 yard line. Joey Keane took the free kick and sent it into the goalie box where Zach Cancila put his head on the ball which snuck right past the goalie.
The goal boosted the confidence of the Cats immediately. With 7 minutes remaining in the game, Clayton pressured the Cats desperate for a goal. Stellar defense by junior Zach Cancila and great goaltending by allowed the Cats to keep their lead and defeat Clayton.
After the game, senior Luke Heintz said, “They didn’t give us many opportunities throughout the game and the one opportunity we had, we were able to capitalize.”
