Ice Cats One Win Away

The Westminster Ice Cats defeated Fort Zumwalt South 4-2 on Thursday night, bringing them within one win of returning of the Wickenheiser Cup Championship Game at the Scottrade Center, the same game that they played in a year ago.

After being down 2-0 within the first ten minutes, the Wildcats rallied back to score a goal towards the end of the first period, the first step in their methodical comeback. The goal was scored by Junior Joe Schroeder on an assist from Jeremy Regeon, the first of what would be three assists for him on the night.

The second and third goals were both scored by Junior Cole McWard, who consistently made Fort Zumwalt players look silly throughout the night, sending them all around the ice as they tried to chase him down.

The Wildcat defensemen stifled the Zumwalt attack after the first two goals, and goalie Sam Haupfear didn’t have to do a whole lot of work until a clutch save he made in the third period with the Wildcats up 3-2. His great glovework saved the game for the Wildcats.

Levi Wright scored the Wildcats’ fourth goal on a breakaway late in the third to seal the deal for Westminster.

Westminster plays Fort Zumwalt South in the second game of this semifinal series next Friday. If Westminster wins, they will play at Scottrade for the Wickenheiser Cup Championship.
