McCracken County Tournament

Westminster soccer team left last Friday on two 15 passenger vans for a tournament in Paducah Kentucky. Going into the tournament that Cats record was 6-7. Westminster showed up in Paducah looking like a team the school has never seen. The team played three games, went out for dinner, shopped at the mall and bunkered down in a hotel for the weekend.
Friday night after a long car ride, and dinner at the Mellow Mushroom the team took on Central Harding high school. Westminster jumped on the early possessing the ball well and scoring in the second minute of the game from a through ball by goalie Joey Keane to Zach Cancila at forward who scored on the breakaway. All game long the team dominated moving the ball around and holding possession.
Cats struck again late in the game in the 70th minute from a wonderful cross by Danny Sacco to Caleb Legters on the far post to really put the game away. Following Caleb, Luke Laughlin put another quick shot in the back of the net in the 77th minute to advance into the championship bracket with a 3-0 win.
Advancing into the winner’s bracket the team took on Marris high school at 11 the next morning with both teams coming off big wins. Westminster had goals coming from Caleb Legters and Danny Sacco giving the team a 2-0 win.
“We looked like a whole new team this weekend and we hope to countinue this into the rest of our season,” Zach Cancila, Captain.
Going into the championship game the team just wanted to bring home the trophy to the rest of the school Monday. Early in the game, the Shamrocks of St Patrick high got a quick goal off of a penalty kick coming from a foul in the box. Westminster was down 1-0 at halftime and was starting to lose hope. Ben Van Zee was streaking down the far side and Luke Linam found him on a great cross as he finished it in the top of the goal to tie things up at 1. St Patrick did not give up to this momentum switch finding a great cross to a wonderful header on the back post. around the 77th minute down by a goal with 3 minutes left with the clock ticking down Zach Cancila found the ball at the top of the box and let a shot loose for a bar down goal by the captain to tie things up.
Game advanced to PK’s with goals coming from Harrison Lawrence, Danny Sacco, Zach Cancila, Nathan Laughlin, Luke Linam, and one big save by Joey Keane. The cats fall to the Shamrocks in round 7 of PK’s to take second place in the McCracken County tournament.
“I have never seen my defense and offense work together so well and posses the ball for a whole game creating the chances they did this weekend. I am proud to be apart of this team and this group of boys as we hope to improve our record from 8-8 the rest of this season,” Joey Keane, Goalkeeper.
