The Westminster Wildcats came out with a big win Friday night, beating Lutheran South on their home field 30-22. This win puts the Wildcats’ record to 3-3.
The Wildcats got of to a good start, scoring 23 straight points in the first half and holding the Lancers scoreless. Ben Straub scored a 55 yard rushing touchdown to give the Wildcats an early 7-0 lead. Westminster showed their ability to run the ball effectively with 374 total rushing yards. Atlin Hall rushed for 176 yards while Ben Straub averaged 16 yards per carry. Hall scored a touchdown and with the 2-point conversion, made it a 15-0 game. Freshman Quarterback Nick Ford passed for two touchdowns, both to Isaac Johnston. Westminster had a commanding lead of 30-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
The defense also came to play, not allowing a single point through three quarters. Hall, showing his abilities on both side of the field, intercepted Lutheran South Quarterback Vito Orlando in the third quarter. Westminster also showed relentless pressure on the quarterback, totaling 5 tackles for loss as a team.
However, in the fourth quarter, the team as a whole became lackadaisical. They allowed 22 points to be scored against them in one quarter while scoring no points of their own.
When the game was on the line and the Lancers had the ball on Westminster’s three yard line on second down, the defense stood up. Westminster held them the next three downs and kept the score at 30-22 with the ball and a minute left on the clock. After Atlin Hall broke free for 40 yards, the Wildcats had stopped the Lancers comeback and secured the win.
The win was Wildcats. biggest of the year, and they look to carry the momentum into next week, where they will face the highly touted MICDS Rams.
