Cold as Ice

Eight games into the season, Westminster Hockey has yet to heat up. The Ice Cats are 2-6-1, most recently losing 7-4 after having a 3-0 first period lead. But the beautiful thing about sports is that there’s always tomorrow.

The defense is being led by Sam Haupfear, senior goalie, who has a save percentage of .900 and 142 saves so far on the year. While Haupfear is holding down the defensive side of the ice, Ben Parres is leading the offensive attack with five goals in the teams first six games of the year.

Parres, one of the team’s captains and also a player for AAA CarShield, says, “We can be a very dangerous team offensively when we move the puck and take smart shots. We know with Sam in the net if we score we will come out on top.”
Having AAA players, such as Parres, may seem like a blessing, but it can actually be very difficult for the team.

With so many players on a AAA club team, it’s hard to know who will be available to makes any games on a regular basis, as many club teams require their players to make the club team their #1 piority. Along with Parres, Sophomores Jack Thomas, Ryan Bystrom, and Michael Woll all play for AAA teams. They try to make as many games as possible, but even a club team practice takes precedence over a high school game.

With the team’s record sitting at 2-6-1, they will continue to battle through the remainder of their season. With a very tough schedule coming up that includes Marquette, Vianney, and Priory, their work is cut out for them.

Soon the team will regain Joe Schroeder, a key deffenseman, off of his three week absence. Along with Joe, the team will regain Ben Parres as well after sitting out a game.

The hockey team will continue to fight hard each and every game trying to make their third straight Wickenheiser Cup appearance at the end of the season. With this goal in mind, the team hopes their fellow classmates to come support them the next couple weeks. A big Blue Crew is a game changer in hockey.
