The Westminster Varsity Hockey team advanced to the semifinals of the Wickenheiser Cup on Monday night, defeating Parkway South 5-2 behind a Levi Wright hat trick.
Westminster did not seem one bit concerned about having lost to the Patriots last week.
In the decisive quarterfinal playoff game, the Wildcats were in control from the very beginning. The offense looked strong from the start, with Levi Wright scoring a goal on a wrist shot just a few minutes in.
The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead on a rebound shot from Aidan Penberthy, the sophomore defenseman.
The Patriots answered with a goal of their own, but Wright scored his second of three goals in the second period to make it 3-1.
Junior Jeremy Regeon had a standout game, scoring the Wildcats’ fourth goal and laying a check on a Patriot defender late in the game that left him stumbling. This was the tone the Wildcats set throughout the game.
Levi Wright scored the Wildcats’ fifth goal to seal up his hat trick and all but seal the game for Westminster. Parkway South added a late goal, but Westminster had overpowered them.
Freshmen Michael Woll and Jack Thomas had strong games, along with Junior Cole McWard, who locked up the defense.
The Wildcats advance to the Wickenheiser Cup semi finals, where they will play Fort Zumwalt South on February 22 and March 2. If they are able to take the series with FZS, they will play in the Wickenheiser Cup Championship game at the Scottrade Center.
