FIeld Hockey Team Shuts Out Barat Academy in 3-0 Victory

The Westminster varsity field hockey team shut down Barat Academy on Friday en route to a 3-0 win. The game was an offensive one for the Cats, as they kept the ball on the offensive side for the majority of the game.

At the end of the first half, the Wildcats lead 1-0 after a goal by Captain Morgan Sickels. At the beginning of the second half, with 23:04 remaining, Sickels puts in her second goal of the game off a pass from senior Sophie Clement. At the eleven minute mark, Rachel Rothrock put in the third goal, leading the Wildcats to a 3-0 victory.

In their previous game against reigning state champions Villa, sophomore defender Grace Clement took a hit to the head, causing her to miss the remainder of the game as well as this game against Barat. The team was concerned on how they would coordinate the defense, as Clement is a key starter and second-year varsity player.

“It is never easy to lose a player, especially a player like Grace,” said Coach Nancy Schmer, “But our team remained determined going into this game, and everyone on the team was ready to step up and take on our opponent.”

The defense was on lockdown throughout, keeping the ball out of their zone for most of the game. Hannah Sturr leads the way on defense, showing off her speed against the tough Barat Academy team. Senior Ann Borchelt stepped up to play the sweeper position and was a standout player on the defensive side.

Senior Meredith Grass was in the goal for the first half of the game, and in the second half, she was subbed out for Junior Sabrina Granata. In the end, Barat had no chance against these two stellar goaltenders, leading to the shutout victory.

The 3-0 win brings the team’s record to 3-3-1. They play three times this week: Monday vs. Lafayette, Wednesday at Oakville, and Thursday at Lindbergh.
