Westminster Girls Soccer is coming off of a District Championship and a 16-4 finish in 2018 where they lost to Rockwood Summit in Sectionals. However, the Wildcats will not lose much of their talent and hope to return stronger this year than they were last year.
Last year, Freshmen Margo O’Meara and Annessa Shively lead the team with 28 and 14 goals, respectively. Also a Freshman, Zoe Lintner started all 19 games, allowing only 13 goals and earning nine shutouts.
The team was led by a handful of Seniors who showed great leadership, while the Freshman found their roles and contributed in important ways. This year, Molly Andersen, Rachel Arndt, and Sarah Melaragno will headline another solid core of Seniors who will show leadership throughout the entirety of the season. While having those Senior leaders, the team will also be returning Sophomores Grace Clement, Margo O’Meara, Zoe Linter, and Annessa Shively to try to continue the reputation they have created for themselves.
Coming into this season, Coach Lawrence and the girls feel confident they will have another successful year. Saying they could have a better year coming off of a 16-4 record and a district championship is a huge statement, but one they feel they can make.
“This year we are going to have a really good team. We lost some seniors last year, but there are some really great underclassmen in our program,” said Senior Captain Molly Andersen.
Molly is a very talented player and she has the most experience coming into this season. With Andersen being the only senior who has been on the team since Freshman year, she now has the experience and confidence to be an incredible player, and lead the charge. Molly enters the season with 43 career points including 13 goals and 17 assists.
The girls all collectively agree that they are going to work harder than they ever have this year to get back to a second consecutive District Title. Prior to the District win for the Wildcats in the 2017-2018 season, the Wildcats had fallen to Visitation in each of the last three years in District Championship.
There are just two weeks before the first games to kick off the season for the girls on March 8 at 3:45 and 4:55 against Lutheran South and Incarnate Word. The team will train hard and get off to a great start. They hope for great crowds and lots of support as the season begins.
